Surprise: People Think That Facebook Isn’t Private

In today’s completely unsurprising news of the day, AP reports that a 60% majority of Facebook users don’t actually believe that their private information is kept private.

Well, there’s a shock.

Perhaps it’s because Facebook is free, perhaps it’s because most people use Facebook to share Memes and other nonsense, or perhaps it’s because Facebook tends to change their privacy settings on a regular basis, usually screwing their users in the process.

What’s more interesting in all of this is that even though a majority of users don’t trust it, they’ve resigned themselves to having to deal with the loss of privacy anyway. Which begs the question: is the society as a whole moving to a place where privacy in general is less important? Perhaps the open question of if medical records should be shared via Google Docs is less of a far-out idea than previously thought.
